RIO DE JANEIRO — After one period of their field hockey quarterfinal on Monday, the United States women found themselves trailing, 2-0, to Germany in the searing heat and facing their first crisis in what had been a joy ride of a tournament.

In winning four of their five games in the first round they had trailed only once, by a single goal, and that was only in the final minutes of one game.
